Overview

Join us as we hike, trail run and sea kayak through the fantastic Norwegian Fjord landscape surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nærøyfjord. Experience the wondrous fjords first hand from both sea level and summits. On this 6 day transformative journey we'll visit remote areas way off the beaten track in teams of 12. The landscape was created hundreds of millions of years ago and has been carved out by glacial movement and continued erosion. Plenty of time to reflect on the passing scenery and develop a deeper understanding about how mankind in the past have managed to settle in some amazing locations and create the societies we know and take for granted today. "Loved it, one of the best experiences I've ever had!" - Alice. Read more reviews towards the bottom!

DAY 2

Day 2 - Gudvangen to Hjølmo Hut

Our Hike will take us along the fjord to the village of Bakka, from where further journeys into the fjord is only possible by boat.

As we pass Bakka, a trail head starts from fjord level and head up the mountain towards the viewpoint Rimstigen, located 725 meters above the fjord.

From Rimstigen, the trail cuts back into a shallow glacial valley before we again begin an ascent to a ridge overlooking the fjord. We aim to reach the summit of Breiskreinosi 1.189 masl in the late afternoon - the views from here are stunning as we watch the fjord landscape spread out far below us.

Elevation gain: Up to 1.200 meters
Hiking distance: 18-20 km
Elevation loss: 650 meters

DAY 3

Day 3 - Hike to Lægdane

Todays hike will take us deeper into the backcountry and back up to elevations of around 1000 meters as we venture into the highlands above the fjord. We will be above the tree line for large parts of today and will navigate our way across the rugged mountain plateau hovering high above the fjord below.

This area is home to a sub-alpine Furu forest, in the past a source for high quality timber due to the slow grown furu trees found here.

It is an area of wetlands, small lakes hidden away in the forest and the waterflow from this area is feeding the large waterfall of Lægdafossen, one of the most impressive waterfalls found in the fjord that plunges all the way down to the fjord below through canyons as it exits the wetlands from 700 meters elevation.

Elevation gain: Up to 550 meters
Hiking distance: 12-16 km
Elevation loss: 250 meters

DAY 4

Day 4 - Hike & Trail Run to Fresvik

Waking up in the sub-alpine forest area, we have time to relax this morning before breaking down camp and begin our hike down to the fjord side village of Fresvik further North.

This hike is mainly downhill and manageable. We lose all elevation gained prior to today and mid-afternoon will catch the first glimpse of Fresvik. At the half way point we will be met by our driver who will collect our packs, as we change into trail shoes & run through hard packed forest trails to towards the village of Fresvik! Offering magnificent views across the main Sognefjord and to its Northern shores.

As we enter the valley leading down to Fresvik we will be passing small local farms – this area grows a lot of fruit and vegetables due to the mild climate found here and as we get back down to the fjord, we get to experience the tranquility living in a small community at the fjord brings.

This evening we celebrate on the shore of the fjord in our luxury eco lodge, getting excited about replacing our hiking/trail boots with Sea Kayaks the following morning!

Elevation gain: Up to 250 meters
Hiking distance: 11-12 km
Elevation loss: 1.000 meters

DAY 5

Day 5 - Sea Kayak to Dyrdal

We begin our morning with a rejuvenating yoga class before preparing our Sea Kayaks for the next 2 days venturing into the fjord system. Our guides will host a briefing covering paddle technique, equipment use and adjustment, as well as a general safety.

We aim to be on the water by late morning and begin our journey onto the waters of the main Sognefjord. Soon Fresvik will disappear behind us and by early afternoon we enter the Northern end of the Aurlandsfjord which is a side arm to the larger main fjord.

Today offers great opportunity to spot some of the wildlife found in the fjord – seals, porpoises and the rare Sea Eagle and King eagle that inhabits the region.

Sea Kayaking distance today: 22 km
Hours of paddling: 5-6 hrs

DAY 6

Day 6 - Sea Kayak to Gudvangen

On today’s paddle, just as we thought the scenery could not be beat, we continue our paddle into the majestic Nærøyfjord. In this part of the fjord, waterfalls are common and we can now witness and appreciate the waters flow from summit to sea level, having visited the sources of these powerful waterfalls on our past few days hiking the highlands above.

Green meadows soon make up the landscape along the side banks of the fjord. We have reached the central part of the Nærøyfjord where small scale farming has played an important role for centuries. Pulling out for lunch at a scenic spot, we learn how people have survived here during thousands of years and how the life in the fjords gradually changed into the society we see today.

Once we reach the base, we'll celebrate & say our goodbyes, with transfers ready to take us to the airport to head home. You are welcome to book a flight for the evening or stay a few extra days & travel home whenever you like!

Sea Kayaking distance today: 12-13 km
Hours of paddling: 3-4 hrs

Stories

1

I recently went on the Trail Pursuit Norway trip. It was truly an outstanding holiday - well organised and fun with the best guides. The views were spectacular, food was amazing and I loved the range of different accommodations (from tree tents to a fancy eco lodge with hot tubs!). All activities (trail running, hiking and kayaking) were well planned and paced. Special thanks to Ed and David for making this trip one in a million.

Went on the Norway trip in August. Super well-organised and unique. Ed, who runs Trail Persuit is great and very down to earth which adds to the enjoyment of the trip. The guide we had, David, was also amazing. The views were stunning (weather permitting) and it was all round, a great trip. I'd go on another trip in the future.

Alice

The trip was great, it was just what I needed and the people I met were amazing! The group definitely helped make the trip. Ed, Craig, Dee and Heda were very accommodating. I am not a very experienced trail runner and it helped massively having Paul and Alice help coach me in this with tips and advice on how to combat the trail runs and hikes to avoid injury. Thank you Ed & Trail Pursuit for running the trip, I’m so glad I bit the bullet and booked on, it was an unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to join Trail Pursuit on more adventures in the future!

We had 6 days of super fun in the mountains and on the fjords. Ed made sure we were all in good spirits and having a blast…which really helped getting through the long days of hiking and kayaking. I highly recommend Norway to anyone, it’s a bucket list must do! Thanks TP for an amazing adventure!
